"Mel Gussow: Why did you choose to direct Vanilla? Harold Pinter: It's not an entirely achieved satire, but I think it's much sharper and much funnier than was appreciated here. It was totally dismissed here. I believe it was to do with me. they treated it badly because I was involved. I did it because I thought it was great fun. MG: I didn't think so. I thought it was a case that you directed it for the money. HP: Let me tell you, you never direct for the money. It's a very arduous bloody thing, directing, and there's no guarantee you1re going to get anything out of it. I thought it was a real satire on riches. I don't think it was exaggerated."

Mel Gussow, Conversations with Harold Pinter, London: Nick Hern, 1994, p.133.

"Harold Pinter directs with considerable brio and obvious belief." Jack Tinker, The Daily Mail, 17 May 1990.
